D'esse

She was born in the Ivory Coast.

After the nurses washed her clean,

they scrubbed her newborn skin lightly with a loofah,

coaxed her pores to receive light and air.

A pocket for her heart

was sewn with sweet fragrance

by goddesses

who appeared in sets of three and then

decorated her spirit with ten fingers and ten toes.

In another corner of the world,

a drop of honey is placed on the lips of every newborn.

The prime movers of first-wave feminism will be performing songs today

about sugary inductions such as these:

Of Being - In Esse.

Of well being - De bene esse.

In flight - Stewardesse,

In omnipotence - Goddesse.

In anticipation of future

departures,

arrivals,

layovers,

stopovers,

meal choices,

and securely fastened seatbelts.

The science of courting fire

is complex and immeasurable,

remote,

unknowable,

erotic,

and wise.

A pocket for her heart

was sewn with sweet fragrance

by goddesses

who appeared in sets of three and then

decorated her spirit with ten fingers and ten toes.
